Last month the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots (I.O.M.M.P.) formed a Women’s Caucus to effect change to assure equal rights, respect and safety for all mariners and workers in the maritime industry. MM&P will advocate for and actively support women’s rights, professional development, networking and the discussion of all issues specific to women in the maritime, including cisgender and transgender women, femmes, and nonbinary people within MM&P and throughout the maritime industry. In addition, membership in the MM&P Women’s Caucus is free and open to all members and delegates, limited initially to women, including cisgender and transgender women, femmes, and nonbinary people within MM&P. The Women’s Caucus and MM&P are also developing a warmline as a peer-support and referral resource.

MITAGS has been selected by the U.S. Navy to provide mission critical firefighting and damage control training to Navy and Coast Guard sailors stationed in the Seattle, Washington area. Training standards require that all sailors must be prepared to combat fires or flooding at any time, whether at sea or in port. The Pacific Northwest is the only part of the world where the Navy contracts this type of training to a civilian fire school.

On May 19th, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced the designation of 27 Centers of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education (CoE). The CoE designation recognizes community colleges and training institutions that prepare students for careers in our nation’s maritime industry. These academic institutions are located in sixteen states and one U.S. territory. MITAGS was one of six dedicated maritime training centers selected for this designation.

After 12 years of service, Emily Hopkins has been promoted to the position of Assistant Director of MITAGS.
