From the National Maritime Center:
The Coast Guard has updated MSIB 08-20, which provides guidance concerning mariner credentials, medical certificates and course approvals, and the action being taken by the Coast Guard due to the novel coronavirus and the disease it causes (COVID-19). This update is in response to a number of questions and concerns raised by the maritime industry and mariners.
In this latest update, Domestic Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) and STCW endorsements that expire between March 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020 are extended until the EARLIER of
- June 30, 2021; OR
- One (1) year after the initial expiration date of the credential (i.e., one year after the expiration date printed on the credential).
Mariners whose credentials are expiring between now and the end of the year should read the MSIB in full, or contact the Coast Guard directly to understand how it affects their ability to continue sailing.
